Lt. Mariam Abdullah Baljafla is breaking barriers as the first female veterinary officer in the Dubai Police, making a significant impact in the K9 unit. This specialized unit focuses on narcotics detection, explosives handling, and tracking as part of law enforcement operations.
Lt. Baljafla’s journey into the world of veterinary medicine was sparked by her childhood love for animals, nurtured by her family’s keen interest in animal care. Despite puzzled reactions from others, her family provided unwavering support for her pursuit of veterinary studies.
Graduating from the United Arab Emirates University’s veterinary program in 2020, Lt. Baljafla followed in her father’s footsteps, who had served in the Dubai Police. Joining the force in 2021, she brought her expertise to the K9 Inspection Department, a vital unit within the General Department of Organisation Protective Security and Emergency.
Specializing in the health and rehabilitation of police dogs, Lt. Baljafla plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being and operational readiness of these canine partners. Her responsibilities include conducting health checks, managing lab and blood tests, administering vaccines, and providing essential medical services.
Reflecting on her experience, Lt. Baljafla expressed gratitude for the support she received from her colleagues in the K9 Clinic’s monitoring section, allowing her to grow professionally and pursue her interests. She emphasized her deep involvement in the direct care and medical treatment of police dogs.
Lt. Baljafla’s role extends beyond day-to-day responsibilities, contributing to major events such as New Year’s Eve celebrations, the COP28 conference, and Expo 2020. She takes pride in her contribution to enhancing security and public happiness within Dubai Police.
With a sense of responsibility and a desire to inspire other Emirati women, Lt. Baljafla aims to achieve significant milestones in her role. As the first female veterinary officer in Dubai Police, she hopes to pave the way for more women to follow in her footsteps and contribute to the fields of law enforcement and veterinary medicine.
