2022 World Cup Last 16 Preview: Portugal vs Switzerland

Portugal Qualify For Last 16 After Win Against Uruguay

Under the guidance of Fernando Santos, the Selecao were expected to cruise through against South Korea after Ricardo Horta put them ahead in the fifth minute. However, their opponents fought back and eventually won the game with a late goal. This was one of the many comebacks that have unfolded during the tournament’s first fortnight.

After suffering their first loss, Uruguay’s victory over Ghana ensured that Portugal would advance as Group H’s top seed. The Portuguese will now look to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2006.

After seeing his side beat Ghana and Uruguay in their opening two World Cup matches, Santos can look forward to breaking new ground this winter. Bruno Fernandes scored twice in the victories over Uruguay and Ghana.

Although Eusebio inspired Portugal to finish third at the 1966 World Cup, they have never made it past the group stage of a major tournament. Two of their last three appearances ended in the knockout rounds.

Due to the ongoing speculation regarding the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo, Santos must make his team selection for the upcoming match against South Korea in Lusail.

In the first season of the UEFA Nations League, Portugal faced off against Switzerland. In the first match, they secured a 4-0 victory in Lisbon, with goals from Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Helder Postiga. Then, in the second match, the Swiss came back with a narrow win in Geneva.

Since Switzerland hosted the World Cup in 1954, they have not been able to reach the quarterfinals. However, after defeating France in the European Championship last year, a well-rounded squad will be able to take advantage of the opportunities that come with reaching the knockout stage.
