The UAE approves emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for kids aged 5 to 11.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has authorised the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine for children in the previously mentioned age group. The approved usage was given based on results of clinical studies and rigorous assessment, with the results showing the vaccine was considered “safe” and showed a “strong” immune response in children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.
The authorisation and results are based on local assessment in compliance with approved regulations and after approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The move helps expand the UAE’s nation-wide vaccination plan, accelerating the recovery process. Targeting this younger age demographic represents a critical stage that enhances prevention, according to the announcement.
Additionally, the Ministry revealed it will start providing booster doses for eligible groups who have received the Pfizer-BioNtech and Sputnik vaccines. These include people with chronic diseases, who are at risk of complications. It will be provided to “all of people in the age group of 18 to 49” and those aged 18 to 59 working on the front lines.
Previously, health authorities in the United Arab Emirates released a full list of all the clinics and hospitals where UAE residents can get a COVID-19 vaccination.

The Sinopharm vaccine is being administered via two injections administered 21 days apart to people aged three and over. According to UAE regulators, the China-developed Sinopharm has 86 percent efficacy, and was approved for use after Phase 3 trials found it was effective against coronavirus. UAE-wide trials involved 31,000 subjects.

However, those who are participants of Phase III of the clinical trial; have received a single or multiple dose of any other COVID-19 vaccine; and children under 12 are excluded from the campaign.
