The UAE approves emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for kids aged 5 to 11.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has authorised the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine for children in the previously mentioned age group. The approved usage was given based on results of clinical studies and rigorous assessment, with the results showing the vaccine was considered “safe” and showed a “strong” immune response in children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.

The authorisation and results are based on local assessment in compliance with approved regulations and after approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The move helps expand the UAE’s nation-wide vaccination plan, accelerating the recovery process. Targeting this younger age demographic represents a critical stage that enhances prevention, according to the announcement.

Additionally, the Ministry revealed it will start providing booster doses for eligible groups who have received the Pfizer-BioNtech and Sputnik vaccines. These include people with chronic diseases, who are at risk of complications. It will be provided to “all of people in the age group of 18 to 49” and those aged 18 to 59 working on the front lines.

Previously, health authorities in the United Arab Emirates released a full list of all the clinics and hospitals where UAE residents can get a COVID-19 vaccination.

The voluntary programme began in Abu Dhabi and covers Dubai and the Northern Emirates – with residents able to register for a free jab.

Different types of vaccines are being used in the inoculation campaign.

As of May 24, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was previously available in two doses administered 21 days apart for those aged 12 and older. Latifa Women and Children Hospital, Hatta Hospital and Al Barsha, Al Mizhar and Zabeel Primary Healthcare Centres will be administering jabs to patients in the 12 to 15-year-old category.

On May 18, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority confirmed that an additional supportive dose of Sinopharm will be available to people who have completed more than six months since their second dose of the jab. The Sinopharm vaccine is being administered via two injections administered 21 days apart to people aged three and over. According to UAE regulators, the China-developed Sinopharm has 86 percent efficacy, and was approved for use after Phase 3 trials found it was effective against coronavirus. UAE-wide trials involved 31,000 subjects.

September 30 was the deadline given for the vaccine booster for those who had received their last dose of the Sinopharm vaccine more than six months ago.

Six DHA health facilities will be administering the vaccine to all other eligible patient categories. They are Zabeel Primary Health Care Centre, Al Mizhar Primary Health Care Centre, Nad Al Hamr Primary Health Care Centre, Barsha Primary Health Care Centre, Uptown Mirdif Medical Fitness Centre and Hatta Hospital.

Patients who previously contracted COVID-19 no longer need to wait for three months to get the jab. Instead they can take it on completion of their isolation, provided the infection was mild or non-symptomatic.

However, those who are participants of Phase III of the clinical trial; have received a single or multiple dose of any other COVID-19 vaccine; and children under 12 are excluded from the campaign.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is currently unavailable in Dubai.

As of June 29, the DHA has started vaccinating pregnant women against COVID-19.

Pre-registering and booking is essential for this service, which is available at all DHA centres.

Before taking the vaccine, pregnant women, especially those with underlying health conditions, are urged to consult their doctor.

It is recommended to take the vaccine, which in this instance will be the Pfizer jab, after the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Elsewhere, both Sinopsharm and Pfizer jabs being administered in the capital by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and is available to everyone except those who are participants of Phase III of the clinical trial; have received a single or multiple dose of any other COVID-19 vaccine; pregnant women; and children under 12.
