Donald Trump has claimed victory in the 2024 presidential election following pivotal wins in swing states Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina, stating that he has received a “powerful mandate” from the American people.
The Associated Press called Pennsylvania for Trump at 2:24 am, marking his third crucial battleground victory after earlier wins in Georgia and North Carolina. With Pennsylvania’s decisive electoral votes, Trump amassed 267 votes in the Electoral College, just shy of the 270 needed to secure the presidency against Kamala Harris.
Addressing supporters at Mar-a-Lago, Trump described his victory as a turning point, forecasting a “golden age” for the United States. His running mate, JD Vance, celebrated the win as “the greatest political comeback in the history of the United States.”
Other battleground state results indicated strong leads for Trump, signaling a potential clean sweep of all seven key states. Earlier in the night, Trump won his home state of Florida, along with other Southern and Midwestern states, including Texas and Iowa. Harris, meanwhile, claimed traditionally Democratic strongholds like New York and California.
The Republican Party also looked poised to regain control of the Senate after flipping seats in West Virginia and Ohio, with the balance of the House of Representatives still uncertain as of early Wednesday morning.
Harris’s campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, announced she would not appear at her election night event in Washington, suggesting Democrats were preparing to concede.
