Recent apprehensions have been raised by visitors to the well-frequented Mall of the Emirates Jogging Pond in Al Barsha regarding the diminishing water quality at the picturesque location. Photos recently obtained by Khaleej Times reveal thick layers of unappealing tea-colored or brown water.
This popular spot, located near the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and directly across from the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, attracts a diverse crowd of both locals and tourists.
Even regulars like Alain, a Filipino expatriate who has been visiting the park for nearly two years, expressed surprise at the deteriorating conditions. “I frequently walk or run along the trail due to its proximity to my residence. However, the muddy brown water is a deterrent. There is now an unpleasant smell lingering in the air,” he remarked.
Despite concerns, a response from the Dubai Municipality, responsible for park maintenance, is currently unavailable.
Imteyaz Ahmad, Managing Director of Future Water and Power Consulting, shed light on the situation, suggesting that the discolored water might indicate the onset of algal bloom, potentially linked to weather conditions and changes in water quality.
Algal blooms are dense accumulations of tiny green plants on the water’s surface, often caused by an excess of nutrients, primarily phosphorus, which algae rely on for growth.
Ahmad urged caution, emphasizing, “These waters can be toxic, and it’s advisable for people to avoid contact until the Municipality takes action to treat it.”
