After defeating Uruguay, Portugal qualified for the World Cup’s last-16. Despite being on the offensive, Uruguay were unable to threaten the game. Their best chances were found by Rodrigo Bentancur and Maxi Gomez.
The South American side will now need to beat Ghana in the final group game to qualify. Although Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had opened the scoring, the goal was eventually given to Bruno Fernandes. There was some controversy regarding whether or not Ronaldo touched the ball.
Late in the game, Fernandes made it two with a penalty after Jose Maria Gimenez handled the ball in the box. He made no mistake from the spot. Although Uruguay was not able to create much threat, they had a couple of chances. Luis Suarez missed a couple of chances, and Gomez hit the post.
The group’s final game will be between Ghana and Uruguay. It will be a repeat of the controversial incident that happened during the 2010 World Cup when Ghana was eliminated after Luis Suarez handled the ball.
A brilliant night for Portugal, but another disappointment for Uruguay.
